Central Arizona Supply has evolved into the largest independently owned plumbing supply company in the southwest after three generations of a local family started, expanded and established the family business.

What began as a simple plumbing supply store in Mesa 47-years-ago has now expanded into nine locations with seven showrooms, one of which is in Scottsdale at 16431 N. 90th St.

The company was started by Bob and Harry Smith because there were not any plumbing stores in the East Valley, according to a press release.

In the late 1970s, their sons, Don, David and Dan, added multiple locations and today, the next generation of brothers, Jeremy and Brandon Smith, has taken over.

They have expanded the showroom and wholesale sides of the business, cementing the company’s place in an industry dominated by national chains, according to the release.

“About 20 years ago, the plumbing supply industry in Arizona was almost exclusively independent businesses, but a shift began a few years back with the national chains buying out all the mom and pop operations,” stated Jeremy in the release. “Then came the recession, which shaped us very deeply. We saw the few remaining family businesses in the industry sell or shutter. It was a time that we found out how to be successful by working smarter, not growing too quickly or making bad risks. My dad has instilled in us conservative business principles – at the end of the day, we need to support our family and the families that work for us. For me and my brother, it is about maintaining the relationships my grandfather, father and uncles have built here in Arizona for almost 50 years. We’ve been able to find our niche and offer customers things that the national chains can’t touch.”

Central Arizona Supply now has more than 110 employees, nine Arizona locations with seven showrooms, a 75,000 square foot distribution center and four divisions including plumbing, showroom, commercial and heating and air.

By increasing its inventory, Central Arizona Supply was able to expand its product offering, handle large commercial projects and supply each of its locations with same-day delivery.

This became a significant advantage against the chains, especially during the economic downturn and beneficial for not only residential customers, but also local plumbers, contractors, builders and designers who need access to product immediately, according to the release.

“My brother and I started in this business by doing everything from stocking shelves to filing paperwork in the accounting department,” stated Brandon in the release. “It’s exciting to see the evolution of our family’s business from one where my grandparents were just trying to support their family to one where we are supporting many families and truly being active members of our community. Being one of only a couple family owned plumbing supply business’s left in Arizona is something we are very proud of and that makes us work harder to stay ahead of all of the national and international chains surrounding us.”
