Adding to this eclectic portfolio, Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty is now listing “The Boulder House,” an Arizona architectural wonder, for the sale price of $4,200,000.

Located in North Scottsdale, just south of the The Boulders Resort, architect Charles Foreman Johnson designed the home in the early 1980s on nine acres of undisturbed, high Sonoran desert.

The Boulder House was built into 1.6 billion-year-old granite boulders, which were once used as an ancient encampment for Native American tribes. The granite boulders on the site also feature Native American petroglyphs and unique rock art. The National Park Service listed the site on the National Register of Historic Places.

After its unveiling, The Boulder House garnered immediate international attention and architectural praise. Considered by many to be a perfect fusion of engineering and desert design, the house has been featured in over 30 publications, and on international TV programs in countries such as Japan and Switzerland.

Stanley Marcus called the house “The Most Original Home in America” in his book “Quest For The Best.” In February 1983, The Boulder House graced the cover of Architectural Digest. To this day, it remains one of only a few Arizona homes to ever be featured on the magazine’s cover.

“There is no debate that The Boulder House is the most unique and eclectically designed residential home in our state,” said agent Preston Westmoreland of Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty. “Whenever I walk through the halls of The Boulder House, I’m always in sheer awe of how Charles Johnson was able to build a home which captures the beauty of the Sonoran desert. I’ve even heard people call the property the ‘Oh My God!’ house since that’s what they say when they enter the expansive Great Room and bear witness to the bright Arizona sunlight shooting across the room.”

In addition to the unique architectural elements, the home has three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The guest bedroom has a private patio entrance and even features a natural fireplace.

The private bathroom for the master bedroom has a tiled deep tub and shower combination. The Boulder House’s modern amenities include double Dacor built-in ovens and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen.

“There is simply no other property that can compare with The Boulder House,” said Mr. Westmoreland. “It’s an icon for the engineering it displays and it is a balance of the modern and the ancient. It is truly an honor for Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty to list this home for sale.”
