Cactus Shadows senior named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

Sarah Weiss

Cactus Shadows High School has announced Sarah Weiss has been named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

Miss Weiss will receive the New American University Scholarship for National Scholars from her top-choice university: Arizona State University, according to a press release. The New American University Scholarship from ASU is for $16,000 per year and is renewable for four years.

“I am so proud of Sarah for being named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship process,” Principal James Swetter said in a prepared statement. “Sarah has demonstrated a tremendous work ethic and is very deserving.”

Miss Weiss will also receive one-time thesis research support of $1,500 and $1,000 toward a study abroad program with Barrett, the Honors College. She has been accepted at Barrett and plans on studying biology in preparation for medical school.

The process of becoming a National Merit Scholar Finalist is lengthy, but it all starts with the PSAT test she took as a junior, a release states. Miss Weiss knew the significance of this test and she excelled on it, which made her eligible to advance in the award process.

“Our CCUSD students continue to embody our mission: ‘Inspire Excellence,’” Superintendent Debbi Burdick said in a prepared statement.
