SCC to offer free income tax filing help beginning Feb. 4

As a designated IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site for the 2016 tax season, eligible taxpayers can receive free tax preparation assistance at Scottsdale Community College from IRS-certified VITA volunteers, many of whom are SCC accounting students.

Every Thursday 4-8 p.m. from Feb. 4 through April 14, and every Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. from Feb. 6 through April 16, volunteers will be available in LIB-463 to provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing.

Qualified taxpayers include those with annual income less than $54,000, persons with disabilities, older adults, and individuals with limited English speaking ability, according to a press release.

SCC business professor Jim Simpson says that the VITA tax preparation program “is the perfect convergence of helping [Tax Accounting] students learn employable skills and life lessons, while serving our surrounding community…”

More VITA volunteers are needed, and community members can help. No experience is necessary, and training will be provided. Contact Mr. Simpson at 480-423-6257 or to learn how you can become an IRS-certified VITA tax preparer.

“We filed over 200 returns last year, generating over $160,000 in refunds for people who need it the most,” Mr. Simpson stated in the release.

Taxpayers should bring all applicable documents, including:

  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Social Security card and SS cards for all dependents or ITIN
  • Birth dates for all dependents
  • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc) from all employers
