On Thursday, April 7 fans will have the chance to meet the nationally ranked, Arizona State University Men’s Rugby team, at a free Macayo’s Meet the Players event before they face off against the Mexican National Team April 23 at The Fiesta Bowl Rugby and Balloon Classic in Scottsdale.
Fans can mix and mingle with the rugby stars at Macayo’s located at 11107 N. Scottsdale Road from 3 to 7 p.m.
“Margaritas. Mexican Food. And a challenge from the Mexican National Team. It doesn’t get much better,” stated Sharisse Johnson, Macayo’s co-owner, in a press release.
Come root on the team, take pictures, and get to know the stars of ASU rugby team, who just defeated top 10 ranked San Diego State team and will take on the three-time defending champions from Brigham Young University April 9.
Among the talent on this year’s squad is 19-year-old Bailey Stringer and roommate, 20-year-old Matt Brennan.
Stringer is best known as the young talent who scored the winning field goal in the ASU vs. UCLA game in 2015, and is excited to lead his team to victory at the Fiesta Bowl Rugby and Balloon Classic.
Brennan has experience playing on the U.S. U-19 squad and has traveled the world playing in tournaments. Another young talent and also team captain, Brennan has potential to lead his team to a historic victory against a national team.
The team has been practicing and working extra hard in anticipation of this challenge against a national league team., the release stated.
Last year’s Rugby Bowl proved ASU rugby is a force to be reckoned with as they beat Ohio State Rugby with a blowout 59-0 win.
The Fiesta Bowl Rugby and Balloon Classic will be held at the Scottsdale Stadium, and is sure to be one of the most unique and exciting rugby events in the country. It also features a hot air balloon glow with the must see Darth Vader and Yoda Balloons which will make their first appearance in Arizona after the match.
