Scottsdale’s Civic Center Library Librarian Lisanne Erie shares with the Independent some personal facts and her favorite books and writers. Get to know Ms. Erie below:

Name: Lisanne Erie

Age: 35

Library: Scottsdale Public Library

What I like most about what I do: The people! I enjoy working with fellow staff and I enjoy developing a friendly rapport with patrons, especially library regulars I get to know over the years. I have worked for the City of Scottsdale library system for almost 15 years!

Where did you come from: Northern California, originally, but I have lived in Phoenix since 1994. Perhaps I could be considered an honorary native as I spent many childhood summers here, sometimes even nights without air conditioning!

If I had picked a different occupation, it might have been: A writer.

My favorite book: This is the hardest question for a librarian! A few of my favorites are: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Swamplandia! by Karen Russell, Property Of by Alice Hoffman, and I could go on….

My favorite author – and why: Another tough one – David Sedaris (a humorist) and Flannery O’Connor. I love Sedaris’s humor. I love humor writing-it is the best way to deal with adversity in life. O’Connor writes the Southern Gothic genre, dark and haunting- my two favorite elements in a book.

Favorite community cause – and why: Early literacy for children. It is so important to instill a love of reading in children when they are young, especially for our “digital natives”, the term used to refer to the new generation. I have two young boys and they love to read anything and everything.

My interests and hobbies: I am a mother of a 4 and 6 year old, both boys, and therefore spend most my time keeping them busy. I love to travel, I’ve been to at least 13 different countries in Europe, all over the US, Canada, and spent a month in Australia. I keep physically active and practice yoga when I have time. I love to read, of course! I also love films: Foreign, Independent Films, and even Bollywood.

The best and/or worst time in my life: Worst time-high school! Ugh, teen angst! Best time-the birth of my boys.

The trait(s) I admire in others: Resilience.

People who inspired me (and how): Many writers and artists throughout history persevered to create something that often wasn’t even appreciated in their lifetime.

My guiding philosophy: Cheesy and proverbial, but solid: Treat others how you want to be treated.

My advice to today’s youth: The world is your oyster, as my mom used to say-elders say youth is wasted on the young-so start living!

One fun fact about myself: I saved up to buy my first car, a 1971 Chevy Nova, and I took auto technology in high school to learn how to work on it.
