Recreation enthusiasts will soon enjoy more options – and landscaping — along a popular section of the Arizona Canal.

Improvements to the multiuse path on the canal between Chaparral Road and the Indian Bend Wash are scheduled to begin Monday, May 2, and continue through the fall.

The improvements will include construction of a desert-colored concrete path and enhanced landscaping along the western bank of the canal. More neighborhood connections are also part of the project. They include pedestrian bridges over the canal at Jackrabbit Road and the Silverado Golf Club, plus enhanced pedestrian crossings at Chaparral and McDonald roads, according to a press release.

Besides the new concrete path, there will still be an unpaved dirt surface to accommodate joggers and horseback riders. The improvements along this section of the Arizona Canal complete Scottsdale’s portion of a 17-mile regional loop trail that also connects with systems in Tempe and Phoenix.

Roughly half of the $4.1 million estimated cost for this project is coming from federal grants. The remaining sum – about $1.9. million – is being funded by Scottsdale’s dedicated 0.2 percent transportation sales tax, the release stated.
