#DSAgainstHunger: hashtag to raise money for childhood hunger

Desert Schools Federal Credit Union is working to raise awareness of childhood hunger in Arizona with the goal of donating $5,000 to support Kitchen on the Street.

Kitchen on the Street is a local community partner whose mission is to eliminate hunger by offering food assistance programs.

During the summer months, food insecurity is often heightened since many children in need rely heavily on the free or reduced-cost breakfasts and lunches they receive at school, according to a press release.

In observance of Hunger Awareness Month this June, every time the hashtag “DSAgainstHunger” is used on social media, Desert Schools will donate one dollar to Kitchen on the Street, up to $5,000.

Studies have shown that children living in food-insecure households are 50 percent more likely to miss days of school, twice as likely to be suspended and 50 percent more likely to repeat a grade, the release stated. Kitchen on the Street offers several programs to provide children with food outside of school with the mission to not only feed but also diminish the potential negative long-term effects of hunger.

“Desert Schools believes that we can create change together. Childhood hunger and food insecurity is a critical problem in Arizona and we want to not only draw attention to the problem, but help do something about it,” stated Susan Frank CEO of Desert Schools, in the release. “A hashtag campaign is an easy and interactive way for our community to learn about the issue and increase awareness through the power of social media.”

In addition to the hashtag campaign, Desert Schools will be publishing educational pieces on the topic for employees and the community on the Desert Schools website.

On June 16 employees from Desert Schools will participate in a day of service; volunteering their time at Feed My Starving Children and St. Mary’s Food Bank, to give back and support this worthy cause, the release stated.
