A puppy is recovering after an owl carried it away Friday, March 29 in north Scottsdale.

A temporary foster family for Foothills Animal Rescue were caring for the 12-week-old pup and her three siblings, according to a press release.

The foster mom Bonnie Ziegler let the puppies out for a supervised potty break early Friday morning at her home in north Scottsdale. All of the pups went around the corner of the house, but only three returned. The fourth dog, named Latte, could not be found.

“I didn’t hear a sound and the other puppies didn’t bark. It was as if she just vanished,” Ms. Ziegler said in a prepared statement. “We immediately started searching and soon our neighbors joined in. We posted a notice on Next Door in the hopes someone might find her.”

The staff at Foothills Animal Rescue was in constant communication with Ms. Ziegler, but everyone feared the worst a release stated.

Nearly 12 hours after she disappeared, golfers at Troon Golf Club found the injured pup, dehydrated and weak, under a tree near the 16th hole. A neighbor who saw the information on Next Door contacted Ms. Ziegler.

Latte spent the weekend at a local veterinary clinic and was released back into Ms. Ziegler’s care Sunday evening. There are no broken bones, but puncture wounds from the owl’s talons are visible in the pup’s skull.

Latte is in good spirits and is expected to remain in foster care for a few more weeks. She may already have an adopter, but FAR will make a formal announcement if she does need a home.
