The Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board appears to be considering Acting Superintendent Dr. John Kriekard for the permanent role of superintendent.

At their most recent meeting on Feb. 7, the Governing Board had a brief discussion regarding its superintendent search, ultimately deciding to take no action.

On Dec. 20, 2018, a previous iteration of the Governing Board said the superintendent search did not meet its expectations and wanted to offer a contract extension to Acting Superintendent Dr. John Kriekard, suspending the search.

This decision also allowed the incoming Governing Board to weigh in on the next steps.

At the meeting, both new board members — Jann-Michael Greenburg and Board President Patty Beckman — agreed with the assessment of the previous board.

There are now two meetings scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 12, where the Governing Board has planned discussions and a possible action item to offer Dr. Kriekard the position of superintendent.

A 3 p.m. private meeting is scheduled to:

  • Discuss or consider employment of Dr. Kriekard for the position of superintendent;
  • Discuss or consult for legal advice with the attorney or attorneys for the board, regarding possible employment of Dr. Kriekard as superintendent, including related employment contracts (existing and potential contracts); and
  • Consult with the attorneys of the Governing Board in order to consider its position and instruct its attorneys regarding the board’s position on Dr. Kriekard’s employment as superintendent, including employment contracts (existing and potential contracts).

Moreover, on the Governing Board’s regular public meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m. on the same day, one of the action items publicized on the agenda is for approval of contract with Dr. Kriekard for the position of superintendent of Scottsdale Unified School District.

Both meetings will be held at Coronado High School, 7501 E. Virginia Ave. in Scottsdale.

Dr. Kriekard was hired as SUSD’s acting superintendent on May 14. His first employment contract was for 123 days — or through Sept. 13, 2018.

Then, in August 2018, the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board decided to abandon its interim superintendent search, and extend Dr. Kriekard’s contract through June 30, 2019.

The Governing Board at that time voted to enter into discussions with McPherson & Jacobson LLC for a permanent superintendent search. The permanent search is said to not have met the board’s expectations, according to a December 2018 discussion.
