Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is recruiting volunteers who wish to help the museum fulfill its role as the storyteller of the American West.

The museum, which opened in January 2015, is located in downtown Scottsdale’s arts district at 3830 N. Marshall Way (one block west of Scottsdale Road, and one block south of Main Street).

The rotating exhibitions feature hundreds of Western artworks, rare historic artifacts and cultural treasures on loan from some of the world’s foremost collectors and institutions, according to a press release.

The museum’s docents lead tours of the exhibitions and tell the stories of the American West, including those of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Those with previous museum volunteer experience, or a background in education or Western studies, are especially encouraged to volunteer, stated the release.

The fall docent training courses will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on six consecutive Wednesdays, Sept. 9 through Oct. 14, the release stated. Attendance at all six sessions is required of prospective docents.

Volunteers are also needed to welcome museum visitors, answer general questions and provide directions within the museum. Volunteers interested in staffing information tables at community events or providing administrative support are also encouraged to apply, according to the release.

A minimum of two, three-hour sessions per month are required of volunteers, the release stated.

Interested individuals should respond no later than Friday, September 4 online at http://scottsdalemuseumwest.org/support/volunteer/ or by contacting Education Manager Wade Weber at wweber@scottsdalemuseumwest.org or 480-686-9539, ext. 212.
