Victim identified in Aug. 1 Scottsdale car fire

The victim of an Aug. 1, Scottsdale car fire in the area of 8650 E. McDowell, has been identified as Alan Paul Spang, 40.

Investigators have determined that the fire began in the engine compartment of a black BMW, according to a Scottsdale police report, after being parked in a parking lot for approximately 30 minutes with the engine running.

At this point in the investigation, alcohol impairment and medical issues appear to be factors in this incident, the report stated.  No foul play is suspected.

A witness observed flames beneath the BMW and yelled for the occupant in the drivers seat to exit the car, stated the report. The witness left the immediate area to call police and returned to find the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, according to the police report.
