Jay Lawrence: I support Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane

I have joined State Senator Kavanagh and State Representative Ugenti-Rita, and a host of others in endorsing Mayor Jim Lane for re-election. I thought I’d like to flesh out my endorsement with some reasons.

First, I have lived in Scottsdale for more than 30 years. I would not live anywhere else in the world and during my radio, TV, and film career I had a chance to prove to that to myself. I’ve worked from Los Angeles to New York and many stops in between.

For the past 26 years I was a talk show host on KTAR radio until I was elected to the Arizona House or Representatives. I have lived under the leadership of a number of mayors in that 30 years and Jim Lane is the best. Best because He has faced the most challenges. With each challenge he’s always acted in the best interests of the people who live in Scottsdale.

Now, what do I mean by challenges.

Scottsdale went through a Great Recession along with the rest of America. Lane rebuilt Scottsdale’s economic engine by ending policies that suffocated business. He proposed a new, tougher more transparent lobbyist and gift ordinance to reduce the influence of special interests. He has revitalized the McDowell Road Corridor.

The list of Jim Lane’s achievements is long and I want to cover the ones I deem most important. I am certain you’ll think of a few I will miss. We have maintained the best possible credit and bond ratings, which means we citizens have to supply less money for community improvements.

Thanks to Jim’s leadership downtown commercial properties like the Galleria — once considered a white elephant — have become technology centers creating hundreds of jobs. Speaking of jobs, the Cure Corridor on Shea Boulevard and through the Airpark, home of the healthcare and bioscience industries, now account for 20 percent of all Scottsdale jobs and provide amazing health care for all of us who live here.

In my non-legislative career I am a Realtor and let me tell you home values are rising, which means more money for residents. Our downtown entertainment area has evolved to an area of national importance and an attraction for a significant number of entrepreneurs. Before I go too long I’ll close with some facts important to me and you.

Jim Lane has overseen the massive expansion of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, giving us more area to walk, run, ride our bikes and watch the beauty of the land and sky around us. And one more thing, important to men and women of all faiths, Jim Lane stopped the mockery of City Hall by halting any kind of prayer by “Satanists.”

So there it is, just a few reasons why I endorse Jim Lane for re-election. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”

Editor’s note: Mr. Lawrence is a member of the Arizona House of Representatives
