Merrill: an open letter to Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane

Recently you decided that you would not attend a debate to defend your positions and actions since you have been in office, or your future visions or plan for Scottsdale as Mayor during a re-election year.

After conversing with the organizations that set this debate up it has come to be known that you had already confirmed your commitment to this scheduled appearance, were given dates and times, as well as location of said debate.

It has been stated by reputable people that your reasoning has been that this is a partisan election and that since there are only two candidates since Mr. Crawford has claimed to have had the signatures to run, but has not recorded them with the City Clerk’s Office and has endorsed you, that there is no reason for the debate.

Recently you have announced plans to give the Southern portion of the city a voice by planning to create a district system but you refuse to meet the residents of the south to explain your position by refusing to attend the debate? You make a statement that this is a partisan election but yet all of our council and mayoral elections are partisan, so how does this make any difference?

You make the comment of only being two candidates in the debate and yet again we have had many elections that consisted of only two candidates vying for the office so again; how does this make a difference?

I would like to know how many debates you have scheduled to take place in either central or north Scottsdale and if you have canceled any of those? Honestly sir, you bellow about wanting to give the southern section of the city a voice but decide that you have no time to come and make a presence to those of us who live here and it appears to have the perfect timing to give us a voice in the south during a re-election year.

So tell me Mr. Lane, is the real reason that you have canceled this debate because it is in south Scottsdale and that the debate you will have is against Mr. Littlefield who has strong support in the south since he has actually appeared for many years at debates and numerous events sponsored by the same organizations that you now have decided to cancel with?

In reflection Mr. Mayor how many times have you attended events in south Scottsdale of an informative nature to explain to us your positions and plans in the last four years?

I see election season is in full swing and this is strike one.
