Opinion: Mayor continues to block non-discrimination ordinance

Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane is running for re-election.

He is telling everyone what a wonderful place Scottsdale is, and what a wonderful job he has done as mayor.  Yet Jim Lane has stubbornly refused to support passage of a comprehensive non-discrimination ordinance.

John GrecoHe talks the talk, but does not walk the walk.

Despite Scottsdale’s stated vision and official values of inclusion and equality, Mayor Lane has pandered to a handful of die-hard right wing extremists who are anti-gay.

A majority of Scottsdale City Council members have gotten overwhelming community and business support for a comprehensive non-discrimination ordinance.

But Mayor Jim Lane has been intimidated by some hateful and discriminatory emails that oppose such an ordinance.  Instead of leading the way forward, Mayor Lane still stubbornly claims there is no need for such an ordinance.  If that were true, however, Mayor Lane and our council members would not be receiving extremist threats to not pass the ordinance!

Mayor Jim Lane may not deserve re-election for a number of reasons.  But right at the top of that list is his shameful pandering to the few hateful and extremist voices in Scottsdale that oppose equality and inclusion.

Mayor Lane’s continuing failure to support a comprehensive non-discrimination ordinance that Phoenix, Tempe, Tucson and Flagstaff have already passed, is a violation of his pledge to lead Scottsdale forward.

Please remember this when it comes time to vote.
