Ortega: Scottsdale City Council deserves an F for ‘Maverick Mural’

Take a look, a close look at the “Maverick Mural” which is under consideration by the Scottsdale City Council on appeal.

Artist Bass, promoter Marvin, MIT architect Chen and Suchart say it is their gift to Scottsdale and if you do not like it, “You just hate Senator John McCain and are against Veterans.”

Their depiction typically shows a wide view with parked cars at the base of the 30,000 pixel mural. Strip away the cars and behold, the late Senator John McCain’s jaw is in the ground and there are six or eight fingers covering his mouth and cheeks.

The mural promoters put an image of John McCain literally in the headlamps of cars.

Just like a deer in the headlights.

The depiction does not show a heroic saluting aviator McCain, or McCain in the Senate chamber working with Veterans. It is hard to tell if the late Senator John McCain is descending or rising with hands covering his face. Oh, also there is a red star to the left.

The Scottsdale City Council “as a whole” will have to hear the case 58-DR-2018 for two reasons:

1) The mural promoters disregarded and trampled upon the neighbor’s commercial parking lot, although prohibited to do so.

2) Councilwoman Virginia Korte expedited their violation with her “wink and nod” when she presided over Development Review Board, last December.

Promoters say it is about “Five C’s” in Arizona. It isn’t. And it isn’t about the late Senator John McCain, even though a lobbyist (Susan Bittersmith) put a note in front of Cindy McCain days after her husbands funeral.

The mural promoters don’t even know that computers replaced “Citrus” when Motorola came to Scottsdale 60 years ago and when Intel to Chandler. Ask the Arizona Chamber, computer-chips over cotton, any day.

Virginia Korte, perhaps for political reasons, gave in to short sentence placed before a grieving widow.

The wall is cracked and very uneven, overshadowing a private parking lot. But the graffiti crew of Mr. Bass trespassed over and even sprayed blue bulls on the asphalt to rub it in. Results are for all to see, botched red cattle skulls with bloody noses, red T-shirts and red citrus look like a crime scene and fractured “x”.

The four vandals sprayed at midnight until the SPD police sent them away.

Every resident, visitor and 10-year-old kid is an art critic.

Why is McCain’s face in the ground in a parking lot in Scottsdale? And City Council will have to view the mess presided by Councilwoman Virginia and four mural promoters.

Instead of five “C’s” they deserve five “F’s.”
