Coronado struggles to break through Payson defense in road loss

The Coronado High School football team struggled to get its offense into the endzone as Payson High School routed the Dons 35-6 Friday, Aug. 24 in Payson.

Junior Mikel James scored the Dons’ lone touchdown on a 34-yard run with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter. By that point, Payson had already scored 26 points.

Turnovers also proved an issue for the Dons as the Longhorns opened scoring with a 16-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Coronado also threw an interception that Payson returned for a 45-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.

The Dons haven’t won a game since Sept. 28, 2017 and are 1-11 under second-year head coach Curt LeBlanc. The Dons will look to get on the winning side as they host Bourgade Catholic Friday, Sept. 7 as they will have a week off prior to their home opener.
